Our take

Why choose this book?

An expedition can be enjoyable to read about precisely because you are not the person attempting it. Bryson’s account mixes an Appalachian Trail adventure with observations about the landscape and the people around him. We would choose it for the recipient who likes travel writing but does not want every journey to become a solemn lesson.

Who it suits

Dads who like nature, travel, dry jokes and stories about plans that do not quite work out.

Before you choose

It is a travel narrative rather than a hiking manual. Its comic perspective and older cultural references will not suit every reader.
